THE AUBURN TRAIL

Bruce and Mary Ann Cady will present their power point program to show the diversity of birds, butterflies, and other creatures that call the Auburn Trail area home. This short, environmentally sensitive section of the Auburn Trail, which runs between Fishers Road and Railroad Mills Road, is just up the road from our Sanctuary. A coalition, formed to protect this habitat, includes members of BANC.

Winter is a great time to look for animal tracks and the stories they tell. Richard and Marcia Kramer, who studied at Tom Brown's School of Tracking, will help us find and interpret the tracks of animals and birds. .Wayne Howard, head of the Sierra Club's Great Lakes Committee, will tell us about the problems that have affected the Great Lakes, including the recent drought, and how the Sierra Club is helping to restore them.

MAPLE SUGARING

Warmer days start the sap flowing in the maple trees. Watch how the sap is collected and boiled down to make the delicious maple syrup we love on our pancakes. Visit the new Montezuma Audubon Center in Savannah and the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge with BANC member and expert birder Janet Miles. We will look for ducks, geese, shorebirds, bald eagles, and other birds. Meet at the Bushnell's Basin Park and Ride lot on Rte. 96 at 1:00 PM.

TRAPPING AND TAGGING BLACK BEARS
IN WESTERN NEW YORK

Kim Babcock, of Finger Lakes Community College, will present a power point program on experiences trapping and tagging black bears. She will also bring black bear artifacts that are part of her education program at FLCC. Please come join us for this event. Our banquet will be held at the historic Green Lantern Inn where we will enjoy a delicious buffet dinner and an interesting evening program. Details of this event will be in the Spring Tanager. SPRING CLEAN UP

Winter's over and spring has arrived! It's time to get the Sanctuary ready for our activities at the clubhouse and grounds. The committee will have hot soups and beverages ready for you to enjoy at lunchtime-bring your own bag lunch (and any goodies you want to share with the hard-working fellow members). Many helping hands make the work go quickly and enjoyably so bring your gloves and rakes and help spruce up our Sanctuary. Leader: Joanne Altre, 377-8549.

ART AT THE SANCTUARY

Our Sanctuary is beautiful any time of the year but especailly in the spring. We'll capture some of that beauty with the help of Plein Air * artist, Claudine Bartlett, who will guide us in our endeavors. Bring your own supplies (if you have them) or use the paints, colored pencils & paper that will be available. Beverages and midmorning snacks will be served. Now is the time to get out and enjoy those long awaited spring wildflowers and birds. After a light breakfast at the Nature Center, our guide will take us out to areas that are normally off limits to the public to enjoy the spring birds and flowers. EXPLORING STERLING NATURE CENTER

Sterling Nature Center in Sterling, New York, (near the Renaissance Festival) has 1200 acres of forest, wetlands and meadows, a heron rookery, and 2 miles of Lake Ontario shoreline. Come hike some of the trails and visit their interpretive center with BANC member Carolyn Ragan. Meet in the NW corner of the Wegman's parking lot on Holt Road at Rte. 104 in Webster at 8:30 AM and bring a lunch to eat at the Nature Center. Leader: Carolyn Ragan, 385-2065.

Family Potluck Supper at the Sanctuary

In years past, we've celebrated summer with a Raspberry Ramble or a Sundae Supper. This year, we will hold a Strawberry Social with organic strawberries from Odonata Farms and other local organic growers. The strawberries will be served as a treat after our 6:00 potluck and a walk around the sanctuary or a scavenger hunt. Strawberries and beverages will be provided. SEARCHING FOR BUTTERFLIES

The Gosnell family recently donated 68 acres of woods and meadows near Lake Road to the Town of Webster. We will search the meadow portion of the property for butterflies and birds with expert Kathleen Dalton. Meet at 10:00 AM at the entrance to the Big Woods on Vosburg Road near Drumm Road. SKETCH, SAVOR AND SING!!

Come to the Sanctuary and hike on our trails! Look around for pretty flowers to sketch and identify. The club will provide some drawing supplies; bring your own, if you so desire. Julie Clayton will not be able to host as indicated in the 2008 Program booklet.  Kristine Smith (461-9395) and Joanne Altre will be hosting the evening pot luck.  Please bring your favorite dish to pass and your own table setting.  Artist, Claudine Bartlett will be mentoring the sketching, and local Irish musician, Cathy McGrath, will be leading a sing-around on her guitar after supper!  The event begins at 4:30 pm.  Dinner will be at about 6:00.

Explore the diverse habitats of the 117-acre Odonata Sanctuary with our hosts the Melcher family. In addition to enjoying the wildlife along the trails, you can tour their unique solar and wind powered barn with its menagerie. Meet at 10:00 AM at Odonata Sanctuary, 20 Parrish Road in Honeoye Falls. Bring binoculars and a lunch to eat there.

AUGUST POTLUCK SUPPER

You are welcome (& encouraged) to visit the Sanctuary anytime during the week. Today, the building will be open so you can use the library, watch the birds from the back window, enjoy a cooling drink prepared by the committee, and try your hand at a couple of nature crafts. At 5:30, the tables will be set for the potluck supper. Please bring your own table service and a dish to pass and remember - this is a carry in-carry out event. Beverages will be provided. ANNUAL PICNIC AND EVENING PROGRAM

Our annual picnic is always an enjoyable event with an afternoon filled with activities etc. Supper will be at 5:30 PM. Please bring a dish to pass that will serve 8-10 people. The evening program -TBA- will begin about 7:30. Complete details about reservations and the cost for the picnic will be in the summer Tanager. Fall is a good time to look for mushrooms. Laramie Brown, former director of the Helmer Nature Center, taught a mushroom course at Rochester Museum and Science Center for several years. BANC has another wildlife sanctuary in the hills near Dansville that was the property of long-time members Floyd and Elizabeth Slater. Meet at 9:00 AM at our Railroad Mills Road sanctuary and enjoy the fall foliage along the back roads as we drive to the Dansville area. Bring a lunch you can carry with you on a hike around the steep hilly Slater property. Leader: Paul Brach, 342-5629.

FALL CLEAN UP

Our final activity at the Sanctuary each year is the fall clean-up. The house committee and building & grounds committee ready the clubhouse (inside & out) for the winter while the volunteers rake the leaves and pick up the fallen twigs and branches. Here is YOUR opportunity to share with other nature lovers some aspect of natural history which is special to you. It may have been an unusual or unexpected nature experience. You could read a favorite poem; tell a story; describe a book you discovered; or show photos of flora, fauna, or footpaths you have followed.
